Improvisation Drumming – Workout with Propellerhead’s Figure app

I wouldn’t define this as jazz improvisation but it sure is fun. I call it free-form jazz rock fusion electronic something.

Improvising on the drums is a really fun way to communicate your drumming skills, techniques, rudiments, patterns, fills, and more. Plus it’s a great workout. I wouldn’t define this video as jazz improvisation but it sure is fun. I call it free-form jazz rock fusion electronic something.

While there are tons of backing tracks here on DrumlessJazz.com and YouTube, there are many ways to make your own backing tracks and/or loops to play along with.

In the video below, I started with a simple synth & bass loop created in Propellerhead’s iOS app Figure then did some improv on the drum kit. The drums were recorded with just my iPhone mic then mixed in Logic Pro X. No need for sheet music or a Bluetooth page turner. Nothing fancy. Just fun.

What are some of your favorite ways to improvise on the kit?
Let me know in the comments below.

Donner Percussion Stick Bag Drumstick Holder Review

I was excited to get their inexpensive Donner Percussion Stick Bag / Drumstick Holder. Keep up to 10 pairs of drum sticks conveniently within reach.

Donner Percussion Stick Bag Drumstick Holder ReviewDonner has proven to be a quality company in the guitar pedal market over the last few years. I own about two dozen of their guitar pedals, 2 of their ukulele’s and their Wireless Bluetooth Page Turner, so I was excited to get their inexpensive Percussion Stick Bag / Drumstick Holder on Amazon.

I use the percussion stick bag/drumstick holder on my electric drum kit.

It can be tricky adding this percussion stick bag to an electronic drum kit rack, but it fits nicely on my hi-hat stand and of the way of playing, as you can see in the video below. It’s made out of aluminum alloy and nylon and the nylon bag detaches by velcro for easy cleaning.

How many Sticks will it hold?

You can hold about 10 pairs of drum sticks conveniently within reach. This handy accessory is extremely helpful to have for any percussionist, drum kit or orchestral player. The heavy duty clamp ensures that your bag stays in place, and the reinforced aluminum alloy framework of the holder is durable for even the toughest of road warriors.

Final Thoughts:

For the price you really can’t go wrong, it would be nice to have the option to tilt the drumstick holder. At the time of writing this post, it has a 4.9 out of 5 stars review on Amazon.

You can get one on Here.

Donner Bluetooth Page Turner Pedal Review

The Donner wireless Bluetooth Page Turner Pedal is a very useful tool for turning pages, reading music, scrolling lyrics, guitar tabs, teleprompting and more. It works with your iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC or Android tablets.

What is a Bluetooth Page Turner Pedal?

The Donner wireless Bluetooth Page Turner Pedal is a very useful tool for turning pages, reading music, scrolling lyrics, guitar tabs, teleprompting and more. It works with your iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC or Android tablets.

I’ve used this pedal with the iOS apps piaScore and Teleprompt at gigs and rehearsal. I also use it with my web browser, pdf readers, Logic Pro and other apps on my computer.

Is It Durable?

Despite being made of plastic, it’s sturdy and effective. The pedals are quiet, so they don’t distract when pressing them and it has rubber on the bottom so it won’t slide around. At about 7 inches by 5 1/2 inches, it’s very portable and will fit in any gig bag.

Settings:

There are a few setting options to use depending what app or device you are connecting to. On my Mac Setting 5 (Space/ Enter) comes in handy to stop/start recording in Logic Pro. Other settings include:

Best Drumsticks For Electronic Drums Zildjian Anti-Vibe Drumsticks Review

When playing electric drum kits, normal drumsticks can take a toll on your arms and hands, especially after playing for long periods of time. That’s were what I call the best drumsticks for electronic drums come in to play.

The Zildjian Anti-Vibe DrumsticksWhen playing electronic drum kits, normal drumsticks can take a toll on your arms and hands, especially after playing for long periods of time. That’s where what I call the best drumsticks for electronic drums come in to play.

The Zildjian Anti-Vibe Drumsticks.

At first, I thought the anti-vibe sticks wouldn’t make a big difference. Perhaps just a useless gimmick. Boy, I was wrong. After switching from standard drumsticks you get no pain after a practice session. These drumsticks are great on practice pads as well.

I use the 7A Nylon Anti-Vibe Drumsticks, but they come in many sizes 5A, 7A and so on, with either wood or nylon tips. Many options here.

If you’re looking for a better drumstick for playing electronic drums, you really can’t go wrong with these in your hands.

From Zildjian:

A consistent favorite for its medium sized dimensions and teardrop bead. Developed in conjunction with noted vibration authority, Sims Vibration Laboratory, Zildjian Anti-Vibe Drumsticks contain a patented feature that effectively reduces key vibrations.

The video below is just a look. Obviously you can’t feel the difference from watching a video. lol
